RE: CONDEMNATION OF THE CULT CLASH IN OSUN STATE POLYTECHNIC IREE AND CALL FOR PROMPT ACTION BY RELEVANT AUTHORITIES
The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Southwest (Zone D) expresses deep concern and total condemnation of the recent cult clash that occurred within the premises of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree on Tuesday, 8th April 2025.
This shameful and life-threatening incident led to a total disruption of academic activities and exposed innocent students to grave danger. It is disheartening that a citadel of learning a place meant to nurture and secure the future of Nigerian youths has become a breeding ground for cultism and unrest.
Even more troubling is the disturbing silence of the institution’s management, led by Mr. Kehinde Alabi, the Rector of the Polytechnic. As at the time of issuing this release, there has been no official statement or press release from the school authorities to address the incident or reassure the student community of their safety.
We ask: *Is this silence an indication of complicity? Are some officials of the institution directly or indirectly involved in shielding cultists within the system?*
NANS Zone D therefore challenges the management of Osun State Polytechnic, under the leadership of Mr. Kehinde Alabi, to wake up to its responsibilities. The institution must take immediate steps to identify, investigate, and ensure that all individuals involved in the cult clash are brought to book both students and any staff collaborators.
In addition, we call on the school management to urgently upgrade its internal security architecture. A functioning and proactive security department is non-negotiable in any academic institution. The safety of students must be prioritized at all times.
We also call on the Osun State Police Command, particularly the Anti-Cultism Unit, as well as the Department of State Services (DSS), to act swiftly by arresting and prosecuting all those involved in the violence. Prompt action will not only serve as a deterrent but also restore sanity to the academic environment.
NANS Zone D will continue to stand firm in defending the rights, lives, and dignity of Nigerian students across the Southwest and the country at large. We shall not hesitate to take further actions if the necessary steps are not taken in the coming days.
We urge all Nigerian students in Osun State Polytechnic and beyond to remain calm but vigilant, and to report any suspicious activities to appropriate authorities.
