NANS WRITES PETITION AGAINST ILLEGAL ARREST, HARASSMENT, AND THREAT TO LIFE BY OFFICERS OF NIGERIA POLICE FORCE, ILOBU DIVISION

To:
The Commissioner of Police,
Osun State Police Command,
Osogbo, Osun State.

Dear Sir,

PETITION AGAINST ILLEGAL ARREST, HARASSMENT, AND THREAT TO LIFE BY OFFICERS OF NIGERIA POLICE FORCE, ILOBU DIVISION

With utmost concern, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Southwest (Zone D) writes to formally petition against the unlawful arrest of Westland Polytechnic Students, harassment, and threats to the life of our Zonal Secretary, Comr. Olutunde Aboke (O’Destiny), by officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Ilobu Division, while responding to a distress call from students of Westland Polytechnic.

On Wednesday 19th March, 2025, our Zonal Secretary, in his capacity as a student leader, rushed to the Ilobu Division following reports of unjust arrests of some students of Westland Polytechnic. Unfortunately, instead of a professional and responsible approach from the police officers, he was met with intimidation, harassment, and threats to his life. This abuse of power by officers who are meant to protect citizens is completely unacceptable, unwarranted, and in total violation of fundamental human rights.

We wish to state categorically that the Nigerian students’ community will not tolerate any form of oppression, brutality, or intimidation from law enforcement agencies. The unprofessional conduct of the officers in question is a clear abuse of office and a threat to justice and democracy.

OUR DEMANDS:
1. An immediate and thorough investigation into the actions of the officers involved in this misconduct.
2. An official apology from the Nigeria Police, Ilobu Division, to the affected students and the NANS Southwest leadership.
3. The release of all unjustly arrested students with immediate effect.
4. A clear directive to all officers to refrain from harassing or intimidating student leaders who act in their official capacity to protect the welfare of Nigerian students.

Failure to act on this matter will leave us with no choice but to mobilize the entire student community for mass action in defense of our rights.

We trust in your commitment to justice and swift intervention in this matter.

Yours in the struggle,

Comr. Olutunde Aboke (O’Destiny)
Secretary General, NANS Southwest (Zone D)
