The Importance of Career Counseling in Shaping the Future of Our Youth. - Comrade Sikiru Aderibigbe, Chief Of Staff, NANS Southwest (ZONE D).

I write to bring to the public's attention an urgent matter that is affecting the future of many students across Ekiti State and, by extension, the nation as a whole. This matter concerns the undue influence of parents in choosing career paths for their children, often disregarding the students' personal interests and talents, which leads to the emergence of half-baked graduates who struggle to thrive in their chosen fields.

In Nigeria, and particularly in Ekiti State, the societal and cultural pressures that compel parents to dictate the careers their children should pursue have become prevalent. Many parents, in their desire to see their children succeed, inadvertently push them toward careers they themselves deem prestigious or lucrative, without considering whether the child has the aptitude or passion for that profession. As a result, many students are enrolled in academic programs that do not align with their true interests or talents, which often leads to frustration, poor academic performance, and ultimately, a lack of fulfillment in their professional lives.

To address this issue, I strongly advocate for the use of the Counseling Unit within the Education Sector to guide students through career exploration and self-discovery. Career counseling should be integrated as a continuous part of the education system, especially for primary and secondary school students. This would allow students to develop a deeper understanding of their personal strengths, weaknesses, and interests, empowering them to make informed decisions about their future careers.

The Importance of Career Counseling in Education
Career counseling plays a critical role in shaping the minds and futures of students. It provides the necessary support for students to:

1. Identify their Interests and Strengths: Through personalized counseling sessions, students can discover what they are passionate about and what skills they excel in, guiding them toward career paths that will bring them satisfaction and success.

2. Make Informed Career Decisions: Counseling allows students to understand the variety of career options available to them, including those they may not have considered due to limited exposure. It ensures they are making choices based on facts and personal interests, not societal or parental pressures.

3. Develop Life Skills and Coping Strategies: Students learn how to handle the stresses of academic pressure and decision-making processes through counseling, fostering emotional and mental resilience.

4. Promote Autonomy and Self-Confidence: Encouraging students to take charge of their own career decisions instills a sense of independence and confidence that will carry over into their professional lives. When students choose a career based on self-awareness, they are more likely to excel in it.

5. Reduce Wastage of Resources: When students pursue careers they are not passionate about, it often leads to poor performance, which results in wasted time, effort, and resources for both the student and the education system. By facilitating career counseling, we can mitigate this by guiding students toward paths that align with their natural abilities.

The Role of the Counseling Unit in Primary and Secondary Schools
The Counseling Unit in Ekiti State's education system can be instrumental in implementing these practices. I urge the government to:

- Strengthen and Support the Counseling Unit: Equip school counselors with the necessary training, tools, and resources to guide students effectively in career planning.

- Integrate Career Counseling into the Curriculum: Regular counseling sessions should be conducted throughout the primary and secondary education levels, helping students explore various careers early on and providing a foundation for later career decisions.

- Conduct Orientation Programs: Schools should host orientation programs for both students and parents, educating them about the importance of allowing students to choose careers based on their talents and interests, rather than external expectations.

- Promote Collaboration with Professionals: Bringing in industry professionals, alumni, and career experts to interact with students can provide a broader perspective and inspire students to consider careers they may not have otherwise thought of.

I firmly believe that by investing in and enhancing the Counseling Unit, the Ekiti State government can create an environment where students are empowered to make career decisions that are reflective of their passions, strengths, and personal ambitions. This will not only improve the quality of graduates emerging from our schools but will also contribute to the long-term development of a well-trained, motivated, and productive workforce for Nigeria.

I kindly request that the relevant authorities consider this matter with urgency and take the necessary steps to support the growth of career counseling services in our education system.

Thank you for your attention to this important issue. I look forward to seeing positive changes in our educational landscape.

Sincerely,
Comr. Aderibigbe Sikiru
