Breaking: NANS Southwest Under Attack in Ogbese, Ondo State – Multiple Injuries and Destruction

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Southwest Zone D strongly condemns the attack on our comrades on the way to the NANS National Convention (Abuja 2025).

On Sunday, February 23, 2025, a convoy of NANS Southwest Comrades, including the NANS Southwest Coordinator, NANS JCC Ekiti Chairman, NANS JCC Ondo Chairman, all Ekiti and Ondo State SUG Presidents, and other NANS members, was violently attacked by hoodlums from the Ogbese community in Ondo State, causing serious harm to many of our members.

The incident occurred around 10:00 AM on Sunday morning as the convoy was en route to Abuja for the NANS National Convention. Without provocation, the Igbese hoodlums launched an attack on the convoy, resulting in several comrades suffering serious injuries. Among the injured were four SUG Presidents and 10 other comrades, who sustained grave physical injuries.

In addition to the physical harm inflicted on the comrades, valuable property was destroyed. Mobile phones, electronic devices, and other personal items were damaged and stolen. The NANS (Zone D) Southwest vehicle, which was part of the convoy, also sustained significant damage, with all side glasses and the windscreen shattered.

This is not the first time such an attack has occurred. NANS comrades from Ondo State have reported that the Ogbese community has repeatedly targeted members of the NANS and student union governments in the past, subjecting them to acts of violence and intimidation. We find this behavior unacceptable, and the NANS Southwest Zone D stands united in demanding justice.

Comrade Owolewa Taiwo, the Southwest Coordinator of NANS, has publicly addressed this as an act of pure oppression. He has called for a collective response in the form of solidarity against such unjust actions. The NANS Southwest Zone D will not stand idly by while its members are harassed and brutalized. We are committed to ensuring that justice prevails in this matter, and we will take all necessary steps to ensure that this is the last time such an attack occurs.

We call on the Nigerian authorities, including the Ondo State Government and law enforcement agencies, to conduct a thorough investigation into this attack, bring the perpetrators to justice, and ensure the safety of Nigerian students. The NANS Southwest Zone D will continue to advocate for the rights and protection of its members, and we will not be intimidated or silenced in our quest for justice.

In conclusion, we stand in solidarity with our injured comrades and demand that justice be served. We will continue to hold accountable those who perpetuate violence against students and work towards a more secure and peaceful environment for all Nigerian students.
