NANS SOUTHWEST REJECTS FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC ADO-EKITI'S RESPONSE TO ALLEGATIONS OF INTIMIDATION AND FINANCIAL EXPLOITATION THROUGH SKILL TRAINING PROGRAMME

The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, yesterday, received a report of a threat and withdrawal of certificates of the public relation officer (PRO) of NANS EKITI JCC and financial exploitation, Upon receiving the report, We writes to express our deep concern and disappointment at the recent response issued by the management of Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, regarding the allegations of financial exploitation and intimidation raised by students and their leaders.

While the management has denied the claims of imposing any financial charges as part of the Skill Training Programme, it is the position of NANS Southwest that the more pressing issue is the response of the management to the concerns of students and student leaders. Instead of engaging in an open and constructive dialogue with student representatives, the management has chosen to issue a threatening letter to student leaders, including the NANS Ekiti JCC PRO, Comr. Olubodun Abiodun Johnson, simply for performing their roles in defending the rights of students. This response has been not only unsatisfactory but also deeply alarming.

Such actions are deeply troubling, as they not only seek to silence student voices but also undermine the democratic values that student representation stands for. NANS Southwest strongly condemns these tactics of intimidation and suppression, and we demand that the management immediately cease all forms of harassment against student leaders.

Furthermore, the management must offer a formal apology to the Nigerian students, acknowledging the inappropriate threats made against their leaders. It is essential that the Polytechnic engage in a meaningful and open dialogue with student representatives, with the aim of resolving these issues fairly and justly.

We hereby give the management of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, 72 hours from the receipt of this letter to take corrective action. Failure to respond adequately will leave NANS Southwest Zone D with no option but to take further necessary steps to protect the rights and welfare of Nigerian students, including escalating the matter through further advocacy and legal channels.

It is our hope that the management of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, will choose to address these concerns in a manner that fosters positive engagement and upholds the rights of the students. However, NANS Southwest remains resolute in its commitment to defending the rights of Nigerian students and ensuring that such intimidatory tactics are not tolerated in any institution.

Yours faithfully,

Signed:
